DESCRIPTION: EPW - Hilaire Basserau, Paris, fusee quarter-hour repeater with jacquemart automation, 54mm, 18K gold OF original consular case with band pierced for added resonance for the strike, hinged gilt dust-cap engraved "Fait et Inventé Par Hilaire Basserau L'an 1800" which translates to "Made and Invented by Hilaire Basserau the year 1800," silver dial perimeter with fabulously hand engraved scene of man and woman as well as 3 dogs and various other floral accents in green, rose, yellow and white gold, inner white enamel dial with winding aperture at 2, KWKS, cylinder escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and engraved foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, no s# present. Gross weight of assembled watch 107.3 dwt (166.9 g). A superb piece by this esteemed maker that is known for the great diversity of his work. Hilaure Basserau was born in 1743 and became an apprentice to Jean-Antoine Lépine and in later years Basserau was to eventually be named watchmaker to the Emperor Napoleon. The dust-cap inscription of this piece is intriquing as it isn't readily apparent what invention Basserau is referring to.
